Marbles

I've been on a marble jag. They are pretty. They make interesting sounds when they clack together. If you hold one up to your eye, in brightish sunlight, you can see the little fissures and bubbles. As a kid, I loved looking through the chunky, orangey-pink plastic ring I got, with my dime, from the machines in front of the grocery store. My fascination was not with fashion. It was with how the edges seemed to glow orange. Bright orange, like a light, while the middle part was just mostly clear, with a sort of pink tint. I wondered how that was done. I still do. I wondered why the light caught there on the edges, and seemed to concentrate. I thought about how to draw this sort of thing, glass. Also metal.

I am not the only one. I've been sort of coaching some neighborhood kids, on some aspects of art that they would like to learn. One girl is doing a marble painting, and left the marble bits until the end. They are fun to paint. I think that's why I see marble paintings online, all over the place. They are fun, and cheery. They make few demands. They are cheap, and colorful, and sometimes really amazing to look at.

With my older daughter home, I've had a lot of stress, and lots of not-fun things to get done. Paperwork-meeting-beaurocratic sort of stuff. Not marbly stuff. So, the other day, I sat down, and did this tiny painting, from a photograph. It's 5"x8", oil, on a little gallery wrap canvas.I was looking forward to doing this painting. It was a treat. As soon as it is dry, it is flying to Hawaii. It looks like a sunny sort of marble, that would want to live there.

My dear friends Katrina and Sean, I see there has been a lot going on. I wanted to re-connect since our last get together (which was too much fun), and thought I would check in here, as it allows me a look into the minds eye as it were. I look forward to catching up again, as it seems there is always more news to share. Really like the Safari Apartment painting. All my best. I'll call you soon.
